Symptomatic treatment of thyrotoxicosis (including Graves-Basedow’ disease).
Treatment of hyperthyroidism in preparation for thyroidectomy until the basal metabolism rate return to normal to prevent possible thyrotoxicosis.
Used as an adjunct to control hyperthyroidism before and during receiving radioactive iodine therapy (131I) until the radioactive iodine therapy works to remove the thyroid gland.
Treatment of thyrotoxicosis (but propylthiouracil is more commonly prescribed) before using iodized salt. it is often taken concomitantly with a beta blocker, especially in the presence of cardiovascular symptoms (eg tachycardia).
